Roots Less Traveled is a live-action, half-hour television program designed to meet the educational and informational needs of children aged 13-16. Roots Less Traveled follows two family members, often from different generations, as they gain a newfound understanding and respect for each other on their quest to learn more about their family history. Each week on Roots Less Traveled, a new pair will set out on an adventure to solve a mystery in their family tree. From rumors of a relative who sailed on the Titanic to stories of homesteaders forging a new path for future generations, our duo will discover the truth behind the tales that have been passed down in their family while our viewers learn the personal stories behind notable historical moments. Viewers will be taken on a literal journey to unique places around the globe, learning more about the culture and history of these significant locations and events that happened there. Throughout this experience, we will witness these family members grow closer as they gain wisdom not only about themselves but also about how their past has helped shape their present.

Season 2




Watch along with half-siblings Michelle and Rob as they relive their journey to Mexico City where host Faruq Tauheed helped them discover that they were related to a very famous Mexican political family.  Their visit also included a trip to the ornate National Palace where their second cousin, Ernesto Uruchurtu, once gave the key to Mexico City to President John F. Kennedy. Michelle and Rob share what it was like to learn that their third cousin, Manual Uruchurtu, died on the Titanic, after giving up his seat on a lifeboat to a woman in need.




Aunt Tammy and nephew Julian give the audience a behind the scenes look at the ancestral journey they took through Brooklyn, NY.  They’ll share what it was like to try their hand at iron working after learning they had direct ties to someone that was a key player in the building and maintaining of the Brooklyn Bridge. Host Faruq Tauheed even took the duo to the final resting place of a special someone that helped the city bury its dead during the epidemic of 1856.




Watch along with Ashley and Elliott as they reminisce about their very special trip to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, where host Faruq Tauheed showed them just how special the island was to their ancestors. The duo tried their hand aboard a sailboat much like the one their 5X great-grandfather, Henry Osborn, was taken prisoner on during the Revolutionary War. They also learn new facts about a building they had been to many times before, the home of their 3X great-grandfather Samuel Osborn, that is now an Inn.




Grandpa Evan and grandson Scott look back on their time together in Billings, Montana where they learned that their relative cultivated 160 acres thanks to the Homestead act of 1862. Host Faruq Tauheed shared a journey with them down the Yellowstone River to go gemstone hunting and helped the two try their hand at being a gem-cutter just like just their ancestor. This dancing duo gives us a behind the scenes look at making a special connection with two relatives that received Purple Hearts after being POWs in WWII.




The entrepreneurial duo of Uncle Al and nephew JR give us insight into their eye-opening journey to Havana, Cuba, which also happened to be JR’s first time out of the U.S. Host Faruq Tauheed helped the two discover the heart and soul of the locals as they explored the 32 blocks of downtown that their ancestor helped develop. Al and JR share how the journey allowed them to reconnect in ways they couldn’t have imagined.




Host Faruq Tauheed watches along as we take a peek at some of our most memorable moments. We take Rob and Michelle to Mexico where we learn that their Cousin Ernesto gave the keys to Mexico City to John F. Kennedy and that their Cousin Manual died on the Titanic. Then, we go to Cuba where uncle and nephew Jr. & Al bond while learning that Al’s grandfather owned 32 blocks in downtown Havana. Finally, we go on an historical Tennessee adventure with mother and son Sharee and Devon as they learn that their ancestor, Larkin Ford, an African American man owned land in Tennessee before the Civil War.




Mom and son duo, Sharee and DeVonn, revisit their trip to Nashville, TN, where they learned that Sharee’s 4x great-grandfather won an historic court case in the 1840s awarding him the land he was once enslaved on. Host Faruq Tauheed shows the two what great strides their ancestors made to better the lives of the African American community around them. Sharee and DeVonn share what it was like to follow in their ancestors’ footsteps and get the people of Nashville registered to vote.




Father and daughter, Paul and Kalina, reunite once again to reminisce about their journey together through the battlegrounds of Port Republic, Virginia, with Host Fauq Taheed. They look back on discovering the ups and downs of a drummer boy relative who was captured during battle, but who found the strength within himself to escape and reunite with his comrades. The duo relish in the trip that brought them back together after many years and make plans to do it all again in the near future.
